Inside Sofia’s Die 4 U 90s Murder Mystery Birthday Bash
We love party traditions here at Foulplay, and we love hearing about how we’ve played our part in shaping parties like our featured host, Sofia! She’s no stranger to murder mystery and hosted a Foulplay murder mystery game for her birthday last year, and this year for her second annual murder mystery birthday, she went the extra mile for her 90s themed birthday bash!
Read on for all of Sofia’s tips, tricks, and favorite moments from the night.
Why did you decide to host a murder mystery party? Was it your first time? Why did you decide to use Foulplay Games?
“I’ve been a huge fan of murder mysteries since I picked up my first Agatha Christie novel. Combine that with a nerdy obsession for role-playing games, and you’ve got the perfect recipe for making every one of your birthday parties a murder mystery!”
We love hearing all the ways that people come to murder mystery! Whether through novels, role-playing games, or other nerdy pursuits we love hearing how people find ways to express their love of whodunnits.
This is Sofia’s second year hosting a murder mystery birthday bash, and after hosting our sci-fi themed Wanderstar last year, she was excited to try our new 90s themed game.
“Picking Foulplay was a no-brainer when it came down to our host wanting to play along with us. Plus, the themes and atmosphere are super unique and really nicely fleshed out, with distinct (gender neutral!) characters and a plot that reels you in with just a few lines!”
Foulplay Games is proud that all of our murder mystery games feature exclusively gender neutral characters so you and your guests can equally enjoy all the murder mystery fun. If you have a larger group looking for 90s fun, we also offer a Die 4 U expansion pack with extra characters!
How did the game go overall?
“The game was, pardon the pun, to die for! Everyone had a blast, starting from admiring each other’s outfits, to getting into the thick of the mystery, and piecing it all together.
I really appreciate how each player had different goals and wants, which made getting into character much easier for even the less-experienced players.”
Of course not everything always goes as planned, but with Foulplay Games you don’t have to worry:
“We had a small hiccup (both this time and last year) with a person not showing up, but Foulplay had our back! The guide they provide makes it super easy to solve issues on the go, to ensure you can keep the momentum going at any point.”
Our games are flexible by design and hard to break! It is really up to you how you want to run the party for your guests.
“I was not the host for our games; my partner wanted me to have the full experience as a player, so she offered to host. Even though she is quite introverted and usually not a huge fan of (board)gaming, she found the host guide well written and clear, helping her plan out the game, and she especially had a ton of fun :)”
At Foulplay we love hearing about people’s first time hosting experiences! We take care to write all of our game materials to be accessible, thorough, and easy to digest.
Were there any extra touches you added or fun memories or stories to share?
“I went all in with decorating! To be honest, 50% of the excitement for a murder mystery for me lies in the prep. I crafted some set pieces, made personalized envelopes, arranged a 90s charcuterie board, set up some mood lighting, and even got a red carpet for the event!”
Setting the stage is indeed half the fun in our opinions! That’s why we have set up a Die 4 U Pintrest featuring all sorts of ideas to set up your own 90s bash.
“Sharing in this enthusiasm, my guests also went all out: bands coordinated their outfits and their wannabe Spice Girls British accents, and the hairspray and hair gel were the real stars of the show!
We love all the extra special 90s touches! Especially this old school touch:
“The cherry on top? I went analog with the music! We said bye-bye-bye to Spotify and burned 4 hours of 90s pop on some CDs!”
Any suggestions, recommendations, or tips for folks wanting to host their own murder mystery game?
“Enthusiasm is the keyword: if you are excited about hosting a game, your players will follow!
Sofia also shared a great tip about prep:
“Don’t be scared to go the extra mile and fully commit to the vibes! This will make your guests just as excited and committed to the tone you set.”
One thing that Sofia stresses is to make sure that guests are clear about when in-character roles start, to make sure that everyone is ready for the night. First-time or more introverted guests? Sofia suggests letting people split a character sheet:
“If you have guests who are a bit shy or nervous about role-playing, we found that having two people play one character worked out beautifully. It takes the pressure off and makes the sleuthing a team effort!”
We love hearing how Sofia went the extra mile for her birthday party! Can’t wait to hear how the next one goes as the murder mystery birthday tradition continues on!
Our thanks to Sofia for sharing both her Die 4 U party and her birthday tradition with us. If you’re ready to crank up the drama and throw it back to the 90s, Die 4 U is available for instant download!
